We visited the North Island for a week. People always talk about the beauty of the South Island.
When I was planning the trip I studied the possibility of combining the North Island with the South, but 7 nights is really not enough to cover both. Also the domestic flight, although short, has a stop, and though we would lose some more time.

We decided to stick to the original plan of visiting the North Island for a reason: hot springs, volcanoes, geysers are there, and that is something you don't see everywhere.
Kiwis is actually the national bird, but New Zealanders are known as kiwis too.
New Zealand is very famous for their rugby team, the All Blacks.
AUCKLAND
WHERE TO STAY
We stayed at the Sofitel Viaduct Harbor. Beautiful. Well -located. We only spent two nights.
WHAT TO DO
Pride of Auckland
We went for a ride around the bay by sailboat. Fully recommended. It was just us on the boat, which I don't know if it's frequent ... We spent a spectacular afternoon with a charming crew. We sailed for about 1 1/2 hours. You can also go in the America´s Cup Yacht. It is something similar.

Go to the top of the building and jump to the void tied to a rope. For those in the need of adrenaline. I did not go.

WHERE TO RENT A CAR?
We chose HERTZ.
We rented a van for 10 people for a good price. We decided to reduce the luggage as much as possible so as not to be recognized as tourists from outside. So we left part of it at the hotel. We were convinced we would pass as “locals” until the van was brought to us the door of the Hotel (a very good service from the hotel who arranged the rental for us), and we saw on one side of the white van a mega-large yellow sign with the letters Hertz in black . We laughed for the next 5 days. We were betrayed by the company. Important note: it is handled in English.
You can hire a private driver but it is not at all needed besides the issue that they drive on the right side (English style).
MATAMATA
(160 kms from Auckland / 2 hours)
It is the town where the Lord of the Rings Movie Set is. It's a stop on the way to the geothermal area, so we didn't mind the slight detour. When we got to the site we were surprised by how cute it was. We loved it. There is an organized tour around the town.
We had a hearty dinner at casual The Redoubt in the town’s main street. An overly decorated place with some of the Hobbits memorabilia.
LAKE TAUPO
(1h30 from the Hobbits)
After much reading and searching, we ended up renting two very well priced apartments with lake views at Sacred Waters Apartments. High season is January. Prices rise seasonally.
The apartments were huge and fully equipped. Being in an apartment allowed us to go to a market and feel a little tourists.

Apart from this place, the Restaurant of the Huka Lodge had been highly recommended.
. We went to visit because it had been an option for us, but it turned out to be expensive. We did not end up eating there. The hotel gardens are beautiful.
In town there are many restaurants to eat. We had Indian in Malabar. It is worth the walk through those streets.
We went for dinner at the Bistro Lago that is in a period house that is now part of the Hilton hotel, which discouraged us a bit, but it turned out to be a well-decorated and crowded place, It has a beautiful view of the town of Taupo.

WHAT TO DO
It is all oriented towards outdoor activities.
We rented bicycles in the village to take a long ride along the Huka Trails Rotary route and finally reach the Aratiatia dam. It was on that excursion that we visited the Huka Lodge hotel.
Note: to take the bikes up to the place where we were going to start the ride, the front wheel had to be removed since they did not fit in the van fit in the car. At the end we managed to get all 10 bikes in.

Huka Falls Jet Ride
We went on a famous speedboat ride on the Waikato River. It was fun, especially for the kids!

ROTORUA
(100 kms from Taupo)
We stayed in a sensational place in front of Lake Tarawera. SOLITAIRE LODGE says it all with its name. It is a place away from everything.
Rooms are all different from one another in size and in decoration. Some with better views than others. We (10 people) almost filled the place. There was only one other couple. The social area is like a regular house with a small bar and a very nice living room. The dining room looks like any at home. The kitchen is in full view and you interact with the chef who cooks delicious food. Their prices include breakfast and dinner; and for lunch they offer you either a lunch box or something light at the premises.
You can go sailing in a motorized boat around the lake. They also have kayaks. In any case, staying at the hotel is not bad at all. The gardens and the sunset are spectacular.
Helicopter tours can be arranged to fly over White Island where N.Z's only active sea volcano is. and also over Mount Tarawera.
You can also take the boat to the entrance of the road that leads to the Tarawera Falls which is a nice walk.

WHAT TO DO
Apart from the things mentioned in the hotel description, Rotorua is the quintessential geothermal area, which incidentally generates an incredible smell of sulfur throughout the town and for which we were grateful that we stayed a little further away.
Wai or Tapu
It is a park full of craters and thermal pools of various colors, a product of the mixture of different chemical elements. There is this famous geyser Lady Knox that erupts every day at 10:15 am, so our day started there. When it erupts the steam rises about 20 meters but the reality is that it is not natural. After a nice chat with a park ranger he explained that some kind of Alka Seltzer is thrown in which is what causes the Lady to spit up. It is about half an hour from the center of Rotorua. It goes along the Loop Road, which is the street that borders the lake. Do not hesitate to go anyway!!

Mud Spa
We went to two places with thermal and mud pools. We didn't really like them. The pools were too crowded. We did not dare to get into any… I guess we may not have chosen the best spas...
We missed a visit to a Maori town with dinner and typical dances. The reason was that all the places, Te Puia, Mitai, seemed too touristy.
Neither did we go to The Skyline. A park with a gondola and some slides, which in the end we thought we could find anywhere in the world.
The drive back to Auckland was long, about 250 kms. We didn’t notice until it was too late, that the GPS was programmed to take us through local routes and so we drove through all the fields and farms of the North Island. We literally saw millions of sheep. Just a minute before going crazy with dirt roads were we able to get back on the highway. The trip took us about 4 hours. We spent that night at the Sofitel, we collected our bags and the next day we flew back to Santiago de Chile on a much shorter flight because of tailwind.

SPANISH VERSION
Fuimos una semana solo a la Isla Norte. La gente habla siempre de la Isla Sur. La explicación es esta:
El boleto aéreo era via Auckland o sea que teníamos que llegar y salir por esa ciudad. Cuando estaba planeando el viaje estudié la posibilidad de combinar la Isla Norte con la Sur, pero 7 noches es poco para ambas. El vuelo interno, aunque corto, tenía escalas, y me pareció que perderíamos tiempo.
Nos quedamos con la isla Norte porque es la que tenía todo lo que son aguas termales, volcanes, geysers, que es algo que no ves en todas partes, así que si van a la Isla sur les tocará a Uds. mandarme los datos a mi.
A los Neozelandeses les dicen Kiwis que en realidad es el pajarito nacional. También son conocidos por su famosísimo equipo de rugby, los All Blacks.

Llegamos al Sofitel Viaduct Harbour. Buenísimo. Bien ubicado.
Solo pasamos dos noches pero la verdad que estuvo bien.

QUE HACER
Pride of Auckland
Fuimos a pasear por la bahía en velero. Totalmente recomendado. Solo estábamos nosotros en el barco, lo que no se si es frecuente… Pasamos una tarde espectacular, con un “crew” encantador. Un paseo largo como de 1 1/2 horas. También puedes ir en el America´s Cup Yacht. Es algo similar.

El grupo de los valientes hizo este plan. Se lanzaron desde el tope de la torre con unas cuerdas al vacío. Para los que les gusta la adrenalina. Yo no fui.

HERTZ
Alquilamos una van para10 personas. Precio decente (no me acuerdo exactamente cuanto) Decidimos reducir al máximo las maletas para no vernos como turistas desde afuera. Pensábamos pasar por “locals” hasta que nos trajeron la camioneta a la puerta del Hotel (un servicio buenísimo del hotel quienes nos hicieron el alquiler), y vimos de un lado de la van blanca un letrero amarillo mega grande con las letras Hertz en negro. Nos reímos los siguientes 5 días. Estábamos delatados. Nota importante: se maneja a la inglesa.
Para nosotros fue lo mejor haber manejado; mucho más que tener un chofer, pero eso depende del grupo.
MATAMATA (160 kms de Auckland / 2 horas)
Es el pueblo donde queda el Movie Set del Señor de los Anillos. es una parada en la ruta a la zona geotermal, así que no nos importó el pequeño desvío para complacer a algunos del grupo. Cuando llegamos al sitio nos sorprendió lo lindo. Realmente creo que valió la pena, pero los adultos lo vimos por fuera y nos fuimos a comer al pueblo mientras los niños hicieron el ‘tour’.
Comimos muy rico en The Redoubt en la calle principal del pueblo. Un lugar super decorado con multiples objetos y algunos de los Hobbits.
Comida informal pero bien presentada y sustanciosa.
LAKE TAUPO (1h 30 desde los Hobbits)
Después de mucho leer y buscar, alquilamos dos apartamentos con vista directa al lago en Sacred Waters Apartments. Nos salieron a un precio excelente, pero hay que tomar en cuenta que su temporada alta es enero.
Los apartamentos parecían de estreno. Eran gigantes y completamente equipados. Estar en un apartamento nos permitió ir a un mercado y sentirnos un poco más del lugar.

Aparte de este lugar me habían super recomendado el Restaurant del Huka Lodge, un hotel sensacional que fuimos a conocer porque había sido una opción para quedarnos pero resultó ser bastante caro. No terminamos comiendo ahi.
En el pueblito hay muchos restaurantes donde comer. Comimos hindú en Malabar porque queríamos variar, pero había de todo. Vale la pena la caminata por esas esas calles.
Cenamos en el Bistro Lago que queda en una casa de época que forma parte del hotel Hilton, cosa que nos desanimó un poco, pero resultó ser un lugar bien ambientado y lleno de gente, Tiene una vista linda al pueblo de Taupo.

QUE HACER
Esta todo orientado hacia las actividades al aire libre.
Alquilamos bicicletas en el pueblo para salir a una paseo larguísimo por la ruta Huka Trails Rotary y llegamos hasta la represa Aratiatia. Fueron varias horas, de hecho se nos fue todo el día. Fue en ese paseo cuando visitamos el hotel Huka Lodge.
Nota: para llevar las bicis hasta el lugar donde íbamos a empezar el paseo hubo que sacarles la rueda de adelante ya que si no, no cabían en el carro. Eramos muchos. Metimos las 10 bicis.

Fuimos a un famoso paseo en lancha rápida por el Waikato River. Fue divertido, especialmente para los niños!

ROTORUA (a 100 kms de Taupo)
Nos quedamos en un lugar sensacional frente al lago Tarawera. Solitaire Lodge lo dice todo con su nombre. Es un lugar alejado de todo. Allí te ofrecen atención total. Los cuartos son todos diferentes. Unos con mejor vista que otros. Nosotros (10 personas) casi llenamos el lugar. Solo había otra pareja. El area social es como una casa normal con un pequeño bar y una sala muy agradable. El comedor también es como de casa. La cocina esta a la vista y te relacionas con el chef que cocina riquísimo. En sus precios incluyen el desayuno y la cena; y para el almuerzo te ofrecen o una lonchera o un algo light.
Puedes salir navegando en su bote con motor a dar una vuelta al lago. También tienen kayaks. En todo caso quedarse descansando en el hotel no está nada mal. Los jardines y el atardecer son espectaculares.
Ellos te pueden organizar paseos en helicóptero para sobrevolar White Island donde esta el único volcán marino activo de N.Z. y también sobre Mount Tarawera.
También te pueden llevar en bote hasta la entrada del camino que lleva a las Tarawera Falls que es un buen paseo.

QUE HACER
Aparte de las cosas mencionadas en la descripción del hotel, Rotorua es la zona geotermal por excelencia, que por cierto genera un increíble olor a azufre en todo el pueblo y por lo que agradecimos habernos quedado un poco más lejos.
Wai o Tapu
Es un parque lleno cráteres y de piscinas termales de colores variados producto de la mezcla de diferentes elementos químicos. Ahí queda el famoso geyser Lady Knox que hace erupción todos los días a las 10:15 am, así que nuestro día comenzó allí. Cuando hace erupción el vapor sube como 20 metros pero la realidad es que no es natural. Después de una charla simpática, le echan una especie de Alka Seltzer que es lo que produce que la Lady escupa para arriba. Queda como a media hora del centro de Rotorua. Se va por el Loop Road que es la calle que va bordeando el lago. No duden en ir!!

Mud Spa
Fuimos a dos lugares con piscinas termales y de barro. No nos gustaron mucho. Había demasiada gente en las piscinas, y en las de barro se ponían el barro entre parejas…nada que ver. No nos animamos a meternos en ninguna…pero puede que no hayamos escogido los mejores spas…
De nuestra lista de cosas para hacer nos faltaron dos: visitar un pueblo maori con cena y bailes típicos. La razón fue que todos los lugares: Te Puia, Mitai, nos parecieron demasiado turísticos.
El Skyline. Un parque con una gondola y unos toboganes, que al final pensamos que encontraríamos en cualquier lugar del mundo.
El regreso a Auckland fue largo, como unos 250 kms. además le pusimos al GPS que nos llevara por rutas locales y así nos paseó por todos los campos y fincas de la Isla Norte, y vimos millones de ovejas, hasta que nos estábamos enloqueciendo con los caminos de tierra y nos montamos en la autopista. Tardamos como 4h en llegar. Pasamos esa noche en el Sofitel, recogimos nuestras maletas y al día siguiente volamos de nuevo a Santiago de Chile con viento a favor, lo que significó un vuelo mucho más corto que el de ida.
