VISIT USHUAIA
THE SOUTHERNMOST CITY IN AMERICA

First of all a mini introduction:
I haven’t been to Ushuaia in summer, which is definitely its high season. I have only visited in winter (July, August, September), for about 7 years in a row. I am writing from here. A city of about 70,000 inhabitants is the southernmost city in the world, because although Puerto Williams, which is opposite and further south, intends to take away the title, it hasn’t got enough population to be called a city. It reaches around two thousand inhabitants.
Even though Ushuaia is not the most beautiful city in the world, its location on a large bay of the Beagle Channel backed by the Andes Fueguinos with the Cerro Martial, the beautiful Mount Olivia and the Cinco Hermanos, will make you love it and will not get tired of admiring its landscape every day of your stay.
In Ushuaia there used to be prison for dangerous criminals for a long time.
HOW TO GET THERE
By plane
It is a little more than 3 hours flight from Jorge Newbury Airport (Aeroparque) in Buenos Aires. Both LATAM and Aerolíneas Argentinas have direct flights.
Note: the Aeroparque airport is the best when you are spending a few days in Buenos Aires before visiting another place in Argentina. It is in the middle of the city, but if you want to go directly to other parts of the country when flying from abroad, you can still try to get a connecting flight from Ezeiza, Buenos Aires International Airport, it is inconvenient to have to transfer from Ezeiza (the International) 40 minutes from the center to this comfortable airport. It is worth mentioning that it is a long drive from Ezeiza to Buenos Aires. It takes 40 minutes at its best. Also there are international flights arriving/leaving from Aeroparque mainly from Santiago, Chile and Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.
By cruise ship
Only in the summer months (November, December, January)
There are super luxury ships that make the Antarctic expedition from Ushuaia, and others that make the crossing between Buenos Aires or Montevideo all the way to Valparaiso in Chile. Generally they stop for just a day in the city.
By land
When you arrive at the crossing you wait for the ferry of the Transbordadora Austral Broom that takes you with your car through the Strait of Magellan. In about 20 minutes you are in Bahia Azul on Tierra del Fuego Island. The price of the ferry trip is about US$ 12. From there you drive to the San Sebastian border crossing, and you are back in Argentina. This trip, depending on the state of the roads, takes about four hours.
The experience is unforgettable. The landscapes as in all of Patagonia are both dramatic and soothing, at least in winter where you breathe an icy and crystalline air where everything seems clearer and where Nature mixes with your inner self.
WHAT TO DO
Well, this place is special. The possibilities are endless for hikers. With zero training I have climbed part of the Martial Glacier (in winter).
You will find plenty of walks, camping and multiple outdoor activities.
Then there is the traditional tourism that the city offers.
Boat trip on the Beagle Channel:
I loved the ride, you go in small yachts or catamarans and get pretty close to the islands. The tours last between 2:30 and 3:30 hours and have two daily departures, at 10pm and 3pm, weather permitting.
The farthest point is the famous Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, and then you stop on islets where colonies of sea lions and cormorants, which are birds similar to penguins, live. One of the boat tours takes you to an island where you go for a half an hour walk. The sea lion islands smell horrible, but it is really fascinating to be so close to these massive animals.
For me it's the number one attraction in town. Prices range from 480 to 700 Argentinean pesos depending on the time f the year and the fluctuation of the currency. I would say its around US$ 60.
The marine fauna in the bay is abundant. In fact killer whales are frequently spotted.

There are several museums on the mainland, but I would go to the Museo Maritimo y del Presidio at the Maritime Base, where the prison used to be. It's an interesting visit; part of the prison has been last just as it originally was. The entrance fee is ARS 150 for non-Argentinean visitors.
There are other museums: the End of the World and Yamaná that I have not visited yet.
Tierra del Fuego National Park and Lapataia Bay
Visit to the beaver farms (which have actually destroyed the whole ecosystem of the area but are worth visiting) and end of Route 3 which starts in Buenos Aires.
On this route you will pass by the End of the World Train Station, which offers a tour (on the train) of the National Park.
- Estancia Haberton is another option for a nice walk.
- Fagnano Lake and Roca Lake.
- Playa Larga it is a really enjoyable beach walk. You’ll the bended trees lining it.
I don't know them but in Avenida San Martin there is a travel agency on every block. They are all willing to take you wherever you wish to go.
WHERE TO SLEEP

A lot of money? Stay in the Arakur. If not, there are infinite options. I know Cilene del Faro, and I like it because it is in the center but it is expensive, also in the center is the Lennox. In Deloqui Street, the Hotel Fueguino. Those are the ones I know but there are plenty, of all prices.
I’ve also stayed at Patagonia Lodge, in the Bahia del Buen Suceso, at an interesting price, but although they are not far, you need a taxi or your car to go out.
I also stayed up on the Martial Glacier in the cabins of Cabañas del Martial, expensive but nice. The internet is definitely not good there.
Depending on your budget I would stay in any of these, but I have to say that Ushuaia is evolving, there is a lot of construction and this time for example, I am staying at a totally new modern apartment paying a fraction of what I have paid in hotels.
WINTER
The best thing about winter is Cerro Castor. It is a ski resort that is very well set up and that with time has been extended and offers good services and very good skiing, with well trodden tracks and artificial snow machines.
I would say that for a skier it is quite recommendable, provided that you have the funds to pay for the www.castorskilodge.com cabins offered by the ski center itself, which are too expensive.
The other option is to stay in the center. At about 27 kms. The inconvenience is that you must stay at a hotel with morning transfers to the Cerro Castor or, if not, rent a cart with snow wheels. In addition to this, the road (Route 3), in winter becomes very slippery.
There are also dog sledding tours. We went to Valle de Lobos www.valledelobos.com although there are several other options to choose from, but I think this is the best. The history of the dogs, the way they are organized, their houses are interesting to know and the walk itself, a whole experience.
Apart from skiing, there are two more things you can do alone in winter: Snowmobile rides are super fun because there is plenty of space to go around and they have a ¨banana¨ that they tie up in the back so the little ones can come along too.
How many days would I stay in Ushuaia?
Well, it depends on the plan, if you come with a group and you are going to go biking or have an organized excursion plan, the visit depends on that.
If you come only to visit the southernmost city in the world, I think two, maximum three nights is enough. The natural beauty of the place is undeniable, but the city is neglected, almost ugly, there is rubble everywhere. The main street is full of shops, though and they light it nicely in the evenings.

Ante todo una mini introducción

No conozco Ushuaia en verano, que es definitivamente su temporada alta. Sólo he estado en invierno (julio, agosto, septiembre), por cuatro años seguidos y desde aquí escribo. Una ciudad de unos 70.000 habitantes que se da el lujo de ser la ciudad más austral del mundo, porque aunque Puerto Williams que está enfrente y más al sur pretende quitarle el título, está no alcanza a llamarse ciudad ya que su población no alcanza los tres mil habitantes.
Aunque no es la ciudad más linda del mundo, su ubicación sobre una gran bahía del Canal de Beagle y con la cadena montañosa donde se encuentra la montaña Martial y un poco más allá el bellísimo Monte Olivia y el Cinco Hermanos, hacen que te conquiste y que no te canses de admirar el paisaje cada uno de los días que permanezcas aquí.
En Ushuaia funcionó por mucho tiempo una prisión para reincidentes y delicuentes peligrosos.
COMO LLEGAR
En avión
Son poco más de 3 horas de vuelo desde el Aeropuerto Jorge Newbury (Aeroparque) de Buenos Aires. Tanto LAN, como Aerolíneas Argentinas tienen vuelos directos.
Nota: el aeropuerto Aeroparque es lo máximo cuando estas pasando unos días en “BAires” antes de visitar otro lugar en Argentina. Está en el medio del medio de la ciudad; pero si quieres llegar y conectar directo a otros lados del país, es incómodo tener que trasladarte desde Ezeiza (el Internacional) a 40 minutos del centro a este cómodo aeropuerto. Cabe decir que hay algunos vuelos domésticos que salen de Ezeiza, al igual que uno que otro internacional sale de Aeroparque.
En barco
Sólo en los meses de verano (noviembre, diciembre, enero)

Hay barcos de super lujo que hacen la expedición Antártica partiendo de Ushuaia, y otros que hacen el cruce entre Buenos Aires o Montevideo, hasta Valparaiso en Chile. Todos son cruceros costosos y por lo general, no pasan más que una tarde en la ciudad.
Por tierra
Al llegar al cruce esperas la balsa de la Transbordadora Austral Broom que te lleva junto a tu carro a través del Estrecho de Magallanes. En unos 20 minutos estas en Bahia Azul en la Isla Tierra del Fuego. El precio del viaje en ferry es de unos US$ 12. De ahí manejas hasta el Paso Fronterizo San Sebastián, y estás de nuevo en Argentina. Este recorrido dependiendo del estado de las carreteras dura unas tres horas.
La experiencia es inolvidable. Los paisajes al igual que en toda la Patagonia son a la vez dramáticos y tranquilizantes, al menos en invierno donde se respira un aire helado y cristalino donde todo parece más nítido y donde la Naturaleza te atrapa.
HACER:
Bueno, este lugar es especial. Las posibilidades son inagotables para los excursionistas. Con cero entrenamiento he subido hasta el Glaciar Martial (en invierno), lo cual es solo un abreboca.
Tienes para días de paseos, acampadas y múltiples actividades al aire libre.
Después hay el turismo tradicional que ofrece la ciudad
Paseo en barco por el canal de Beagle :
Me encantó el paseo, vas en yates pequeños y te acercas bastante a las islas. Los paseos duran entre 2:30 y 3:30 horas y tienen dos salidas diarias, a las 10pm y las 3 pm, siempre que las condiciones del tiempo lo permitan.
El punto más lejano es el famoso Faro de Les Eclaireurs, y después se va parando en islotes donde viven colonias de lobos marinos y de cormoranes, que son pájaros parecidos a pinguinos. Uno de los barcos te lleva una isla donde haces una caminata de una media hora. Las islas de los lobos huelen horrible, pero es realmente fascinante encontrarse tan cerca de estos masivos animales.
Para mi es la atracción número uno de la ciudad. Los precios van entre 480 y 700 pesos argentinos.
La fauna marina en la bahía es abundante. De hecho hay hasta orcas.

En tierra firme hay varios museos, pero yo iría al Museo Maritimo y del Presidio que queda en la Base Marítima, donde anteriormente estaba la prisión. Es un visita interesante, en la parte donde funcionó la cárcel, en especial la sección que dejaron tal cual fue. El resto es solo regular. La entrada cuesta ARS 150 para visitantes no argentinos.
Hay otros museos: del Fin del Mundo y Yamaná que no he visitado todavía.
Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego y Bahía Lapataia
Visita a las castoreras (que en realidad han destrozado todo el ecosistema de la zona pero que vale la pena visitar) y final de la Ruta 3 que nace en Buenos Aires.
En esa ruta se pasa por la Estación del Tren del Fin del Mundo, que ofrece un paseo (en el tren) por el Parque Nacional.
- La estancia Haberton, es otra opción de paseo.
- Lago Fagnano y Lago Roca.
- Playa Larga
Nota: yo no las conozco pero la Avenida San Martin tiene una agencia de viajes en cada cuadra. En alguna leí que ponen a disposición del turista camionetas para llevarte a estos lugares por el día.
DORMIR
Donde quedarse
Mucha plata? Quédate en el Arakur. Si no, pues hay infinitas opciones. Conozco Cilene del Faro, y me gusta porque esta en el mero centro pero es caro, también en el centro esta el Lennox, en Deloqui el Hotel Fueguino, y muchísimos otros de todos los precios.
Hay unas cabañas que se llaman Patagonia Lodge, en la Bahia del Buen Suceso, a un precio interesante, pero aunque no están lejos, necesitas taxi o tu carro para salir.
También me he quedado arriba por el glaciar Martial en unas cabañas: Cabañas del Martial, costosas pero lindas. El internet no es bueno.
Dependiendo de tu presupuesto me quedaría en cualquiera de estos, pero tengo que decir que Ushuaia esta evolucionando, hay mucha construcción y esta vez por ejemplo, estoy estrenando un apartamento totalmente moderno pagando una fraccion de lo que he pagado en hoteles.
INVIERNO:
Lo mejor del invierno es el Cerro Castor. Es una estación de esquí que está muy bien montada y que con el tiempo ha sido ampliada y ofrece buenos servicios y muy buen esquí, con pistas bien pisadas y fabricadores de nieve artificial.
Yo diría que para un esquiador es bastante recomendable, provisto que tengas los fondos para pagar las cabañas www.castorskilodge.com que ofrece el propio centro de esquí y que son demasiado caras.
La otra opción es quedarse en el centro. A unos 27 kms. El inconveniente es que debes alojarte en un hotel que tenga traslados al cerro incluidos o en su defecto, alquilar un carro con ruedas de nieve. Adicionalmente a esto, la carretera (Ruta 3), en invierno, en mi opinión, es para expertos.
También están los paseos en trineo de perros. Fuimos a Valle de Lobos www.valledelobos.com aunque otras varias opciones para escoger, pero creo que esta es la mejor.. La historia de los perros, la forma como están organizados, sus viviendas son interesantes de conocer y el paseo en si, toda una experiencia.
Aparte del esquí, hay dos cosas mas que puedes hacer solo en invierno: Paseos en snowmobile súper divertidos porque el espacio para recorrer es amplio y tienen además una ¨banana¨ que amarran atrás y los pequeños van ahí tirados por la moto de nieve.
Cuantos días me quedaría en Ushuaia?
​Pues depende del plan, si vienes con un grupo y vas a rodar en bici o tienen un plan de excursión organizado, la visita depende de eso.
Si solo vienes a conocer la cuidad más austral del mundo, creo que dos, máximo tres noches está suficiente. La belleza natural del lugar es innegable, pero la ciudad es descuidada, casi fea, hay escombros por todas partes. La calle principal está llena de comercios, casi todos turísticos. Ahora pusieron una iluminación que la hace ver un poquita linda en las noches.
