The distance between Madrid and Marrakech is about 1000kms. In less than two hours you arrive in this exotic city in the center of Morocco. There are also connections from almost all European cities.
HOTELS
La Mamounia *****
That's how the hotel describes itself:
"Once upon a time there was La Mamounia..." 90 years of history and not a single wrinkle since 1923, the date of its first opening. This legendary hotel has been able to seduce thousands of spirits in search of luxury, tranquillity and voluptuousness...
It is the luxury hotel par excellence. Its strong point is its location. It is a few steps away from the city's medina and its famous square.
It has spectacular gardens full of aromatic orange and other fruit trees, flowers and palms. A huge swimming pool and a high tech gym outside the main building.
The architecture is typically Moroccan and even the rooms, although refurbished, are decorated in Arab style. The bathroom is filled with soaps and body lotions of super exotic scents, and “balghas” in place of the regular hotel slippers.
La Mamounia is not a "boutique" hotel, nor does it pretend to be one, it has some two hundred rooms plus three luxurious Riads within the garden, with its own swimming pools.

Sofitel Marrakech *****
In the style of LaMamounia. It is a big hotel with beautiful gardens and close to the medina with very good restaurants in the premises. Although they both have five stars, this one lacks a bit of personality, but it is really very nice. I would say that it is a matter of affordability.

Amanjena *****
A stunningly beautiful hotel, with a golf course. Although more intimate and really well cared for, it's far from the medina, just about 6 km outside the center which forces you to take a taxi to get closer to the city.

Riads
In Marrakech, I would recommend to stay at one of the very fashionable "Riads". They are very old houses with interior gardens that were almost destroyed but lately many have been rebuilt and remodeled very much in the Moroccan style, but with all the luxuries you could imagine. They are small and accommodate only a few people, which actually gives a sense of intimacy not offered by large hotels. Sometimes you don't even notice that other guests are staying at the same place as you are. Many are inside the medina. Prices vary according to quality.

RESTAURANTS
There are several delicious Moroccan dishes, but an interesting fusion of French and Asian food is Bo & Zin. It has a lot of atmosphere, with music, beautiful people... it changes your whole perspective of eating in a typical Moroccan place with lot of dishes, and the classic tagine in the middle. And the music... Go try it, you’ll certainly enjoy it!

A FEW MORE TIPS
A knowledgeable guide is essential.
​
If you are traveling on your own, the hotels and riads will always have one, and if you arranged a tour ahead of your trip, no doubt someone will be waiting for you at the airport and will accompany you during your stay. It is key that the guide is a local so that he can move around the medina easily and help you make the most of your days.
Not to be missed
The main square is like the symbol of Marrakech. It is called Djemaa El Fna. It is very picturesque and chaotic at the same time, full of stands selling orange juice and many others Morrocan souvenirs. Next to it, is the medina, with its typical labyrinth full of small shops grouped according to the activity. It's a pleasure to walk around.
This medina was founded by the Almoravids in 1070.
If you arrive in the afternoon, go there in the evening when it is full of entertainers and storytellers. Then the next morning you return with more time and explore the souks.
Very close to the medina is the Koutubia Mosque and the Bay Palace.

The Ben Youssef Madrasa is also worth a visit.

A little further away, but still within the city are the Ménara Gardens. It's nice to see the sunset from there and the view of the Atlas mountains.

Rent a Fourtrax (quad bike) to tour the desert. We started at Palmeraie. It is exciting, a real adventure. Part of the drive is by road among regular cars.

Central Atlas and the Desert
Complementing Marrakech with the excursion to the desert is essential. Normally you travel by land, so you should leave just after breakfast and start climbing the mountains. When you reach the top you find a small monument that lets you know you have crossed the Tichka Pass at 2260 meters above sea level. On the way up you will see berebere settlements.
Our first stop was one of the best preserved and biggest Kasbahs in the world. It is called Ait Benhaddou. Is the place where some of the scenes from Gladiator where filmed.

Ouarzazate is a good place for lunch. You follow the road called the route of the Thousand Kasbahs and you can spend one or two nights there. It is an exceptional place. It's a small kasbah in the Dadès Valley, in a palm tree oasis called Skoura.
DAR AHLAM *****
​
A secluded place to enjoy the fragrance of the almond blossoms, participate in the harvest of dates and olives in the traditional style. Also to discover the valleys of the Dadès and the Drâa in a 4x4, or by bike, or on the back of a donkey or a camel. You can also spend the day relaxing in the house, the swimming pool, sauna, or the gardens.
Dar Ahlam can also arrange an unforgettable evening for you. You can sleep in one of the tents under the light of the stars in the dunes.
Prices at Dar Ahlam start at US$ 1100 per night per room with all meals and drinks included. You have to take into account that it is about 560 km from Marrakech.
XALUCA DADES ****
It is a hotel located in Boulmalne, with beautiful views and the possibility of hiking the surrounding mountains. It is a nice place to spend the night at, but this is no Dar Alham. It includes a buffet dinner. The rooms are well maintained for and spacious. Prices are US$ 220 per night with half board per room.

Finally at Erfoud, you arrive at the edge of the desert. Here you will leave your car and take a camel ride all the way to the village called Merzouga. Your final destination are the tents set up for you in the Erg Chebbi, on the sandiest part of the desert. You then embark on desert ride up in your camel until sunset enjoying the change of temperature from warm to cool to cold. You can feel it we you put your bare foot on the sand. It is such an experience to be in the middle of the desert riding a camel along with your family or friends.
Then you return to the camp where you will spend the night. If you go in winter as we did, and you get the first tent, you are guaranteed to have a memorable night. The thick carpets serve as walls...but are not enough to keep you warm, you may well freeze as we did. It is an experience that we'll never forget!
My advice is to fly on the way back. There is an airport that is less than an hour away. There are no commercial flights. Only private charters and obviously it is more expensive than returning the 600 kms by bus, but flying over desert views is a privilege and landing in Marrakech an hour later, more.
We stayed one more night in Marrakesh and then took our flight back home from Casablanca. A rather neglected city that apart from the Hassan II Mosque which is huge and very well maintained, there is not much more to see. It is a long drive from Marrakes, almost 3 hours. All European airlines operate from there. A day visit is enough to give you an idea of the city that never served as a stage for the film that bears its name.
Lodging at Four Seasons gave it a boost to our short visit though.

Desde Madrid hay unos 1000 km a Marrakech. En un vuelo de menos de dos horas llegas a esta exótica ciudad del centro de Marruecos. También hay conexiones desde casi todas las ciudades europeas.
HOTELES
La Mamounia *****
Así se describe a si mismo:
“Érase una vez La Mamounia...”. 90 años de historia y ni una sola arruga... Desde 1923, fecha de su primera apertura, este hotel legendario ha sabido seducir a miles de espíritus en busca de lujo, sosiego y voluptuosidad...
Es el hotel de lujo por excelencia. Su punto fuerte es la ubicación, queda a pocos pasos de la medina de la ciudad y de su famosa plaza.
Tiene unos jardines espectaculares llenos de naranjales y otros frutales, flores y palmeras. Una piscina inmensa y un gimnasio buenisimo fuera del edificio principal.
La arquitectura es típicamente marroquí e incluso los cuartos, aunque remodelados, están construidos siguiendo el estilo árabe. En los baños hay aromas super exóticos de sus "gadgets" de baño, y las pantuflas típicas de los hoteles, en este son babouchas puntiagudas.
La Mamounia no es un hotel "boutique", ni pretende serlo, tiene unos doscientos cuartos además de tres lujosos Riads dentro del jardin, con piscina propia y habitaciones gigantes.

Por el estilo del anterior. Es hotel grande con lindos jardines y bastante cerca al medina y de muy buenos restaurantes. Aunque ambos tienen cinco estrellas, a este le falta algo, igual no se queda atrás en su intento. Yo diría que es cuestión de bolsillo

Amanjena *****
Un hotel bellisimo, con cancha de golf y todo, aunque más intimo que La Mamounia. No es cerca de la medina. Queda como a 6 km fuera del centro lo que te obliga a tomar un taxi para acercarte a la ciudad.

Riads
En Marrakech habría que aventurarse con los muy de moda "Riads". Son casas viejas con jardines interiores que estaban venidas abajo y que han sido reconstruidas y remodeladas muy al estilo marroquí, pero con todos los lujos. Son pequeñas y alojan pocas personas, lo que da una sensación de intimidad que no ofrecen los grandes hotels. A veces ni te enteras que se alojan otros huéspedes. Muchas están en la medina. Los precios varían según la calidad. He oído sobre La Orangerie y también La Maison Arabe. Estas dos son costosas, pero sin duda, de volver, me quedaría en estos o en algún Riad para vivir la experiencia.
RESTAURANTS
Hay varios de comida marroquí riquisimos, pero una fusión interesante de francés con comida asiática es el Bo & Zin. Tiene mucho ambiente, con música, gente linda…te cambia toda tu perspectiva de comer en un lugar típico marroquí de muchos platos, y la "tagine" en el medio, quede todas maneras tienes que probar y sin duda, disfrutar!
Nomad es todo chic aunque lo encotrarás en la Place Rahba Kedima en la zona de las especias de la Medina.
TIPS
Las estadías dependen siempre de la disponibilidad de tiempo que puedas aprovechar y según este uno se adapta e intenta sacar el mayor provecho de las horas, días o la semana que tengas.
Un guía conocedor es imprescindible.
Si viajas por tu cuenta, los hoteles y los riads siempre contarán con alguno, y si traes tu viaje organizado, sin duda alguien te estará esperando y te acompañará durante tu estadía. Es clave que sea del lugar para que se desenvuelva bien dentro de la medina y puedan aprovechar los días al máximo.
Qué no debes perderte
La Plaza principal es como el símbolo de Marrakech. Se llama Djemaa El Fna. Es muy pintoresca y caótica a la vez, llena de stands de ventas de jugo de naranja y otras frutas, souvenirs etc. Al lado, está la medina, con su laberinto típico lleno de pequeñas tiendas agrupadas según la actividad. Es un placer pasearlos.
Esa medina fue fundada por los Almorávides en el 1070.
Si llegas en la tarde, camina hasta ahí de noche cuando se llena de entretenedores y cuentacuentos. Luego la mañana siguiente regresas con más tiempo y exploras los zocos.
Muy cerca, de hecho, se va caminando, está la Mezquita Koutubia y el Palacio de la Bahía.
También merece una visita la Madraza de Ben Youssef. Un poco más lejos, pero aún dentro de la ciudad, allí están los jardines de la Menara. Es lindo el atardecer desde allí y las vista a la Cordillera.
Alquilar un Fourtrax (quad bike) para recorrer el desierto. Salimos de Palmeraie. Es emocionante, toda una aventura. Una parte del recorrido lo haces por la vía entre carros.
Atlas centrales y el desierto
Complementar Marrakech con la excursión al desierto es esencial. Normalmente viajas por tierra, así que sales después del desayuno y comienzas a subir las montañas. Al llegar al tope te encuentras con un pequeño monumento que te hace saber que has atravesado el Paso Tichka a 2260 msnm. En el camino podrás ver asentamientos bere beres y luego comienzas a bajar para llegar a la primera parada: Una de las Kasbahs mejor conservadas y más grandes del mundo. Se llama Ait Benhaddou. En ese lugar filmaron entre otra películas, algunas escenas de Gladiador.
Ouarzazate es un buen lugar para almorzar. Sigues la ruta que llaman de las Mil Kasbahs y puedes parar a pasar una o dos noches en un lugar excepcional. Es una pequeña kasbah que queda por el Valle del Dadès, en un oasis de palmera que se llama Skoura.
DAR AHLAM *****
...Un lugar para disfrutar la fragancia de los almendros en flor, participar en la recolección de dátiles y aceitunas al estilo tradicional. También para salir a descubrir los valles del Dadès y del Drâa en un 4x4, en bicicleta, a lomo de burro o camello. También puedes pasar el día en la casa, la piscina, sus saunas, o los jardines. Y para vivir una noche inolvidable, puedes dormir entre las dunas en uno de sus campamentos bajo la luz de las estrellas.Precio: cerca de US$ 1100 por noche por habitación con todas las comidas y bebidas incluidas.Siguiendo camino se llega a Dadès y se hace la ultima parada antes del desierto. Hay que tomar en cuenta que son unos 560 kilómetros desde Marrakech.
XALUCA DADES ****
Es un hotel ubicado en Boulmalne, un lindo lugar con unas vistas preciosas y con la posibilidad de hacer paseos por la montaña. Está muy bien para pasar una noche. Incluye la cena tipo buffet. Las habitaciones están bien mantenidas y son espaciosas. Precio: US$ 180 por noche con media pensión por habitación. Finalmente, pasando Erfoud, se llega a la entrada del desierto. Aquí se dejan los carros y te montas en un camello hasta el pueblo que se llama Merzouga. Casi en el destino final: tus carpas en el desierto Erg Chebbi, ahí es la parte más arenosa del desierto. Paseas largo en camello hasta el atardecer disfrutando el cambio de temperatura de la arena y el ambiente con la caída del sol. Después regresas al campamento de lujo en el que vas a pasar la noche, si vas en los meses de frío y te toca la primera carpa, tienes asegurado un congelamiento de varias horas, porque lo que resguarda del frío son las grandes alfombras que hacen las veces de paredes...no es suficiente, pero el lugar es maravilloso.
El regreso más recomendado es en avión, desde un aeropuerto que queda a una hora. Hay charters privados que obviamente resultan mucho más costosos que regresar los seiscientos kms en autobús, pero vives la experiencia de volar sobre el desierto y aterrizar en Marrakech una hora más tarde.
En este viaje puedes considerar regresar por Casablanca. Una ciudad más bien descuidada y donde, aparte de la Mezquita Hassan II que es enorme y muy bien mantenida, el resto decepciona, pero queda a poco menos de 3 horas por tierra de Marrakech, y todas las lineas europeas operan desde ahí. Con un día de visita tienes suficiente para darte una idea de lo que es la ciudad que nunca sirvió de escenario para la película que lleva su nombre.
