TRAIN FROM EDINBURGH

We flew from London to Edinburgh for a short trip. Lovely city though it was quite a windy weekend. We were to spend 5 days there but at the end we decided to travel back by train and stay in the English countryside for a couple of nights.. It was no mistake. I'll tell you about that trip later. For the moment I want to give you some feedback about train travel.

I have always liked traveling by train, I find it super comfortable and easy to use; I see many advantages over planes and even cars in some cases.

This is my defense thesis:
​
1- If your final destination is not too far away, you'll get there even faster than if flying.
​
2- If you choose the right ticket it’ll always be a deal compared to other means of transport.
​
3- Traveling by car is obviously more expensive.
​
4-To make a fair decision just check your the destination in Google Maps and get the estimated travel time and then compare.
​
5- There will surely be exceptions, such as carrying too much luggage, in which case renting a car may be a better option.
​
6- Another thing you have to take into account when traveling by car are tolls. In many countries they are expensive.
​
7-Traveling by plane: airports are generally further away from the city center. It will take some time getting there. Then you'll have to add the time spent in Security queues. You always have to arrive earlier to an airport than to a train station.
8- Trains are almost always on time.

But... if the distance is too long, there is no doubt that you'll get to your destination faster by air travel!! and if that's important to you, don't hesitate.
Personally, I feel very comfortable on a train, I get straight to my car without going through x-rays or security, I keep my luggage with me, and once I'm in my seat I don't have to move until I reach my destination, not to mention the beauty of the landscape that makes its way through the windows of the train.
TRAINS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
Several super important facts to consider:
If you buy the ticket on the day of the trip (contrary to what you might think), the price of the ticket will be very expensive! As an example: Edinburgh - Chesterfield (almost 4 hours of travel for almost US$ 200 in 2nd class) compared to a ticket from Chesterfield to London (about 3 hours) bought the day before for about $ 40.
There are a number of discounts on the trains that you should not miss. They range from 30% to 60%
Some examples:
Young people between the ages of 16 and 25 years old or full time students
Senior Citizens
2 people traveling together
Children
Family groups
It's just a matter of getting into National Rail page and check the info under "Railcard" to choose the one that best suits you. I bought mine right at the station. They ask you for a passport photo and the card has an annual cost of US$ 45 but I guarantee that starting from your first trip, it will be a deal.
Another detail: they seldom ask for the tickets once the train leaves, but it’s important to NEVER leave your ticket inside the train since you will need it to get out of the train station at your destination.
Finally, the route from Edinburgh to Chesterfield in Derbyshire is one of the most spectacular routes I have made by train iat was truly of an unexpected beauty. In particular the first part where the train rides along the east coast of the island. Absolutely recommended!

Siempre me ha gustado viajar en tren, me parece súper cómodo y fácil; le veo muchísimas ventajas sobre los aviones e incluso carros, en algunos casos.
Esta es mi tesis de defensa:
En muchas ocasiones llegas más rápido a tu destino. He sacado varias veces la cuenta y me da.
En cuanto a viajar en carro: por ser un medio de transporte privado, evidentemente es más costoso, pero en caso de que tengas tu carro previamente alquilado y estés considerando moverte a un lugar cercano, es una buena opción.
Siempre ten en cuenta que hoy en día los trenes son tan rápidos que es imposible alcanzarlos por autopista.
Para decidirte sólo tienes que ver la distancia a recorrer en googlemaps y el tiempo estimado de viaje y comparar. En todo caso, hay excepciones, como es el hecho de estar transportando demasiado equipaje, que es algo que realmente no es compatible con los trenes.
Otra cosa que tienes que tomar en cuenta son los peajes. En muchos países son costosos. Yo pagué entre Albertville y Ginebra casi US$ 20 en peajes.
En cuanto a viajar en avión: los aeropuertos en general están más alejados del centro de la ciudad, ahí ya pierdes algo de tiempo; luego tienes que tomar en cuenta las nuevas normas de seguridad que hacen que tengas que llegar más temprano al aeropuerto y finalmente la posibilidad de retrasos, que siempre es más alta que en tren. Los trenes han sobrevivido como los más puntual de los medios de comunicación, pero entre avión y tren no puedo pelear con los tiempos salvo que la distancia sea realmente corta. Sin duda, llegarás más rápido volando!! y si eso es importante para ti, no lo dudes.
Incluso en precio, por la fuerte competencia actual las lineas aéreas han reducido sus precios y en algunos casos puedes conseguir tarifas muy, muy económicas.
Personalmente, me siento muy cómoda en el tren, llego directo a mi vagón sin pasar por rayos x ni seguridad, mantengo mi equipaje conmigo, y una vez que estoy en mi asiento ya no me tengo que mover hasta llegar a mi destino, sin contar con la belleza del paisaje que hace su recorrido por las ventanas del tren.
TRENES EN EL REINO UNIDO
Varios datos súper importantes a tomar en cuenta:
Atención: si compras el ticket el mismo día del viaje (contrario a lo que pudieras pensar), el precio del ticket te saldrá carísimo!!! Como ejemplo: Edimburgo - Chesterfield (casi 4 horas de viaje por casi US$ 200 en 2da clase) comparado con un ticket de Chesterfield a Londres (cerca de 3 horas) comprado el día antes por unos $ 40.
2- Hay una cantidad de descuentos en los trenes que no debes desaprovechar. Van de un 30% a un 60% Por ejemplo:
Jóvenes entre 16 y 25 años o estudiantes a tiempo completo
Tercera edad
2 personas viajando juntas
Niños
Grupos familiares
Es cuestión de meterse en http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
y revisar los “Railcard” para escoger el que más te conviene. Yo compré la mía directo en la estación. Te piden una foto tamaño carnet y tienen un costo anual de US$ 45 pero les garantizo que desde el primer viaje ya conviene tenerla.
Otro detalle: los tickets los piden una vez que el tren sale, pero hay casos en que no los piden. Es importante que NUNCA los botes o dejes dentro del tren, ya que en esos casos es porque a la salida del andén habrá maquinas tipo las del metro que sólo se abren al introducir el ticket.
Finalmente, la ruta que va desde Edimburgo a Chesterfield en Derbyshire es una de los recorridos más espectaculares e inesperados que he hecho en tren. En partcular la primera parte que va bordeando la costa oriental de la isla. Absolutamente recomendado!!!
